My Journey as an Astrologer
In the Beginning ....
My interest in astrology began when I was quite young. In grade school I remember writing a letter to Jeane Dixon, a well-known syndicated newspaper astrologer and psychic of that time. I'm not sure whether writing her was part of a school assignment or just something I wanted to do on my own. What I do remember is her reply (yes, she actually wrote me back!) She thanked me for writing and then said a lot of stuff about God. As a kid I thought she must be very religious and wasn't quite sure what that had to do with astrology. It wasn't until many years later that I came to my own understanding that astrology and belief in a higher power are completely compatible. In fact, it became the best explanation to me for how astrology actually works and its spiritual value.
Years later, when I was around twenty, I found a book at the library that led me on a fascinating journey exploring the Emerald Tablet, Hermes Trismegistus, Alchemy, the concept of 'as above, so below' and surprisingly back to astrology! My first astrology book was a rather mainstream popular book, "Write Your Own Horoscope" by Joseph F. Goodavage. I have always felt that this book changed my life. It taught me that astrologers are interested in not just the Zodiac position of the Sun (how your Sun Sign is determined), but also the Moon and all of the planets in our solar system. The book contains tables to determine (based on your birth date) the Zodiac position of all your planets AND what Sign was on the horizon (the Ascendent) based on your birth time. Once those are determined the book has descriptions of the planets and Ascendent in each of the Signs. Reading those descriptions is what changed my life. It felt like things I knew deep within myself were being acknowledged. I felt affirmed and more comfortable with myself. It made me feel real in a way I hadn't quite felt before. I fell in love with astrology because of this.
The Real Astrology ....
That was my introduction to 'real astrology' which is much more complex than the common sun sign predictions that many of us were reading in the newspaper and magazines. 'Real astrology', simply put, is about planets in signs, planets in houses, and planets in aspect to one another. The planets (which includes the Sun and the Moon) are always moving, changing their Zodiacal positions at different rates through all time. We too, the world as a whole, are also continually changing over our lifetimes. The complexity of astrology certainly matches the complexity of a human being living in the world with all its varied challenges and opportunities over the course of a life.
Many more books and authors followed as my eyes continued to be opened and my curiosity piqued. "The Astrology of Personality" by Dane Rudhyar, resonated for me with its psychological, philosophical and metaphysical perspective of astrological symbolism and cycles. The prolific writer and astrologer Robert Hand (who I had the opportunity to study), Jeff Green, Michael Meyer, Stephen Arroyo, Alen Oken, Liz Greene to name a few, were early influences in my astrological studies.
During these early years there were no personal computers to generate an accurate astrological chart. It was done by hand using an ephemeris with tables of astronomical data, multiple formulas, logarithm tables, pencil and plenty of paper. It took a lot of time, focus and skill to calculate and hand draw someone's chart with the exact degrees of the sun, moon, planets, ascendent and all the house cusps. Many mistakes were made and slowly learned from. My skill became good enough that my first astrology teacher, Doris, invited me to assist in her classes teaching the calculation part of astrology! As a newbie I felt very honored and a little surprised that this ability was actually a worthwhile skill.
Personal computers arrive ....
Computer-generated mail-order charts eventually appeared on the scene but were an expense. They also took time to get delivered in the mail. Sometimes I used them, but mostly I continued calculating on my own, trying to streamline the process and get faster. As you can imagine, when the first astrology programs for personal computers came out it was a relief and a huge gift to astrologers!
My father, despite not being a 'fan' of astrology, was very supportive in helping me get started with using the computer programs. Being able to more quickly and easily do charts accelerated my learning. Charts for more friends and family, historical figures, charts for historical events, curiosity about events in my own life, doing chart comparisons for relationships, looking into the future! All this led to my continued fascination and at times astonishment at how accurate astrology can be. How is it possible that as above, is so below? I feel a higher power must be generously showing us through the placement and movement of planets and stars dynamics that translate into our varied human energy patterns and life experiences.
Today ....
There is something to this mystery of astrology that continues to intrigue me 50 years later. It has remained a life-long study and practice. I love my computer.
My hope is that the enthusiasm for and love of astrology that I have will be helpful and supportive of your spiritual growth, inner knowledge and self-appreciation, your clarity of path and purpose, and your overall sense of peace and at-onement with life.
